Too much exciting stuff…

I’ve been playing around with tools for personal organisation (basd on the Get Things Done philosophy) – such as MonkeyGTD and d-cubed. They’re great – I particularly like MonkeyGTD – but as part of procrastinating is (for me at least) not being able to decide on the best tools for things, it has proved something of a mixed blessing.

(Search Wikipedia for information on Get Things Done (GTD); unfortunately the site’s down at the moment so I couldn’t get the link.)

And as the more I look into the internet the more zillions of tools I find for doing similar jobs, I find myself more and more at sea, and needing even MORE tools to help me organise and remember the ones I already have.

So which of this galaxy of free stuff to evangelise about?

For a start, you’d be fools not to use Firefox – it opens up whole new realms of possibilities, particularly for web development – and to check out Google, which is brimming with incredible tools for sharing and accessing information.

I want to share these particular links, because I think what they offer could improve the flow information no end:

Google and Google Labs

Google has tons of stuff, including tools for sharing calendars, sharing spreadsheets, collecting and storing information as you browse the web, and seeing who is blogging about a particular web page. (Google Labs is where these tools are kept while still in development, so they may still be a little buggy.)

‘Get Things Done’ organisation tools

MonkeyGTD and d-cubed (both based on TiddlyWiki). The cool thing about TiddlyWikis is that all your notes are saved to a single html file. It runs best in Firefox (presumably because of its adherence to standards and fuller css implementation).

In fact, Firfox is relied on by a lot of these tools, including some of the Google ones (a number of these are in fact Firefox extensions). Even if you primarily use Internet Explorer, Firefox really does open up huge new possibilities, and in my view everyone should have it installed (it is free, after all).
