  • On Saturday a small group of us met with Gisela Stuart, Member of Parliament for Edgbaston, to discuss her approach to social media.
It was great to see her enthusiasm for learning about the tools and using them appropriately. She asked some perceptive questions and we, I hope, furnished her with some pearls of wisdom. I [...]

Playing with CSS (IE7 fails, of course)

  • I’ve been playing with CSS3, just for fun really. All of the styles I’ve used work in Safari; most of them work in Firefox and Opera; none of them work in Internet Explorer 7.

For my test page I wanted: paragraphs with transparent coloured backgrounds layered over images; each image to be different; the boxes to [...]

Boffins sniff keystrokes with lasers

  • This is scary. Researchers have hit upon a way of stealing passwords from a distance, even if your computer isn't connected to a network. Using inexpensive equipment, they were able to pick up vibrational patterns and electromagnetic pulses discharged when typing characters. Presumable only a matter of time before it can be applied to cashpoints too.

  • Professional and amateur photographers were yesterday given the opportunity to share their work and swap photos, at an event organised by Birmingham Photospace.

The ‘Flash Swap’ was the group’s first publicity event, intended to raise the profile of their campaign for a dedicated photography gallery in Birmingham.
Although hidden away in a dark corner of the Custard [...]

One week of wifi: could you do it?

  • Is it possible to work full-time without an office, simply taking advantage of free wifi offerings? To find out, I intend to spend one week trying it. And I call on others to do the same.
The dates are yet to be confirmed, but I hope to try and work for a full five days (in [...]

Making sense of Birmingham’s creative community

  • March 18, 2009 at 1:44 am

  • I’ve started a fledgling blog to help me make sense of Birmingham’s creative organisations; of the different names and acronymns that crop up when people talk about Birmingham’s various ‘creative’ and ’social media’ groups (the two seem to overlap an awful lot).
This started from a comment I posted on Paradise Circus months ago, and a [...]

How would we spot a nervous breakdown on Twitter?

  • March 16, 2009 at 8:37 pm
  • Categories: Social media
  • With so much of people’s conversations and personalities now available for everyone to see, is there a responsibility on us as users of social media to keep an eye out for others?
If the answer is ‘yes’ – as I should hope it is – does that mean that we should also learn to see cries [...]
