Gisela Stuart MP meets Birmingham bloggers
On Saturday a small group of us met with Gisela Stuart, Member of Parliament for Edgbaston, to discuss her approach to social media.
It was great to see her enthusiasm for learning about the tools and using them appropriately. She asked some perceptive questions and we, I hope, furnished her with some pearls of wisdom. I hope she found it productive: I certainly found it useful and interesting (and was proud to be part of the group).
We gave her some tips on engaiging with users of her blog, and on managing the fallout from using social media (we also suggested using the flowchart for managing online reputations, which I hope is useful; it would be interesting to know how she gets on with it).
Encouragingly, Gisela asked if we would be happy to meet her again. Definitely; helping an enthusiastic MP get to grips with social media is worthwhile I feel.
The group met by Gisela Stuart comprised Ben Whitehouse, Jon Bounds, Julia Gilbert, Andy Mabbett, Gavin Wray and myself.
I enjoyed meeting you too. thank you for the advice and link.
Look forward to sharing some of my experiences with you next we get togehter.

It’s worth noting that we also talked to Gisele about “Free our Data“, the campaign to make the UK government’s non-personal data such as maps and postcodes free for all sorts of commercial or non-commercial use.
Andy Mabbett
If Gisela has commented here, something worked. Sorry for spelling your name wrongly, Gisela!
Andy Mabbett
It’ll be interesting to see how Gisela makes use of her new blog and some of the ideas we talked about. Looking forward to seeing it up and running!
It was great to meet an MP genuinely interested in how this social media stuff can be used (and nice to be part of this group).
I’d recommend Michael’s flowchart for managing online reputations; it breaks what seems like a complex area down into simple choices and actions.
Gavin Wray
I am still working on the overall design of the new website, so bear with me. Gavin thank you very much for the flowchart. It’s something that probably every person in public life should have in front of them when a journalist rings.
I will also keep the “free our data” campgain in mind. I am not aware of any legislation coming up – but if there is, please do alert me to it.

I should point out that Michael made the flowchart (adapted from the US Air Force’s original). It’s certainly useful.
Hope everything is going well with the new blog design.
