Ruby on Rails beginners club in Birmingham: are you interested?

For months I’ve been having conversations with people about how we should set up a Rails beginners group in Birmingham, so now I’m actually going to do it.

I realise that even among beginners there will be a wide range of expertise levels. Therefore I ask attenders to have at least started trying to write a Rails application.

It doesn’t matter how far you’ve got with it – you may only be halfway through the first page of a tutorial and are stuck trying to install something – but this approach should give everyone a context for being there. In other words: rather than trying to learn together from different starting points, we can each bring a problem that we need help with and collaborate on concrete goals.

When?

If you’re interested please indicate on Doodle your preferred times for a first meeting.

Update

The most popular time for a first meeting was 7.00pm on Tuesday 4 May, so that’s when it will be.

Where?

The first meeting is being held in Room B225, Birmingham School of Media, Perry Barr. (Many thanks to Paul Bradshaw for arranging the room.)

We’ll see how this first one goes, but we might try for any subsequnt meets to be more central. If you have any suggestions let me know in the comments below. We need a space that:

  • is free to use;
  • is available late on weekdays;
  • has free, reliable wifi;
  • can comfortably accommodate a number of people working together, without disturbing others.

    Count me in. I’ve done the Doodle thing. Wonder if Moseley CDT building might be available?

  2. mikep says:

    Would love to join, but busy on all those dates. I’ll certainly come along to future meet-ups.

  3. Please not Moseley! City centre so those of us without cars can all make it.

      I agree it should be as central as possible. Any chance that BCU might let us use a room?

      • I’m sure they would. We’ve done it before – would need to make sure the wifi signal is strong and need to check whether there are any firewall issues that might cause us problems.

  4. Tom Martin says:

    Yep I’m in,
    Totally worth getting in touch with http://www.wmrug.org/ they normally have meetups at Fazeley

    • Michael says:

      Thanks Tom. How often does WMRUG meet?

      I think it’s worth going ahead with this anyway, even if we only meet once and decide there’s no point having more than one group.

      What do other people think?

  5. Michael says:

    We’ve got a date (Tuesday 4 May, 7pm), but no venue yet. We may be able to get a room at BCU, but not with adequate wifi. My reasons for requiring wifi were so we can:

    • easily download software and ruby gems as required;
    • demonstrate useful online resources.

    Any thoughts?

      Update:

      Apparently it’s just the firewall that might be a problem at BCU, so we’re going to risk it. Paul Bradshaw has kindly offered to book a room.

    i’m definitely interested in principle, but that date doesn’t work for me, being to close to the election when i’m aware i’ll be somewhat busy. & i’m also aware of being interested in doing lots of things in principle which when it boils down to it i never actually stir myself to get off my bum…

  7. Hey guys. I am a Ruby developer based near London and have attended the first two rubyinthepub events. I can’t get to Brum but if you need any pointers or help let me know (I am @buddhamagnet). Cheers!

  8. Neil says:

    Did a location get decided, as far as I can tell it’s somewhere in a BCU room.

  9. Moxy says:

    I has a potential interested. I repeatedly fall in and out of love with Ruby, acknowledging it’s the “best” Web framework around, but just not going gooey over it like I do with Django.
    Maybe being with other Rails newbies will help. Count me probably in… unhelpful a statement as that is.

  10. Dom says:

    I was made aware of this group today and found that I have missed the first event. How did it go will there be another one? I would really love to learn RoR

  11. Doctorluz says:

    I’m also interested but a complete newbie (despite being familiar with MVC and various Web dev frameworks). Please do post details of the next meeting if there will be one!
