I rarely go to gigs these days, but a couple of Fridays ago – on a whim – I joined Pete Ashton at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath to see a band I’d never heard of. It was a good whim.

I’m not going to try and write a piece of music journalism because it would be disingenuous of me to pretend that I know anything about live music, and therefore unfair on the bands.

I will say that the support act (who may have been The Winter League, but I’m not sure) were enjoyable; melodic, whimsical and a little melancholic, which fitted my mood at that moment.

And I will also say that Vetiver – the main act – were, in my book, bloody great.

Vetiver at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath, Birmingham (photo by Pete Ashton)

They have a distinctive country edge to their largely acoustic repertoire, and reminded me a little of The Shins (which, I now see, is probably not a coincidence).

I notice that they’re playing at the SXSW music festival, so if you’re lucky enough to be going do check them out.

If you’re a Spotify user you can listen to Vetiver here.
