Recently I wrote about Auntie Elsie’s music box. Unfortunately it’s impossible to tell which track is which, because – being on a cylinder – it’s not possible to tell which comes first. So I need your help.

Can you match the music to the track list?

Here are the tunes (in mp3 format):

Auntie Elsie’s Music Box track A

Auntie Elsie’s Music Box track B

Auntie Elsie’s Music Box track C

Auntie Elsie’s Music Box track D

Auntie Elsie’s Music Box track E

Auntie Elsie’s Music Box track F

Auntie Elsie’s Music Box track G

Auntie Elsie’s Music Box track H

and here’s my attempt at deciphering the track list:

Le General, Havelocks. Marche

[Horp de Looden To?]
When I tried that in Google it asked if I meant “Horp de Loodsen To”; but trying that as a phrase returned no results.

Love [Launcho?] a fairy boat
(“Love launched a fairy boat” returns results in Google)

Be mine dear maid

Phillis is my only joy

Fern [L..?] Valse

Alladdins Lamp

Wait for the Wagon

I’ve written the track names exactly as I’ve found them, hence some unusual spellings (like ‘Alladdin’ rather than ‘Aladdin’) and some unknowns.

The image is of the track list. It’s covered in ancient scellotape (at least 30 years old) which reflected off my camera’s flash, so impairs the image somewhat. Never mind.

I rarely go to gigs these days, but a couple of Fridays ago – on a whim – I joined Pete Ashton at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath to see a band I’d never heard of. It was a good whim.

I’m not going to try and write a piece of music journalism because it would be disingenuous of me to pretend that I know anything about live music, and therefore unfair on the bands.

I will say that the support act (who may have been The Winter League, but I’m not sure) were enjoyable; melodic, whimsical and a little melancholic, which fitted my mood at that moment.

And I will also say that Vetiver – the main act – were, in my book, bloody great.

Vetiver at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath, Birmingham (photo by Pete Ashton)

They have a distinctive country edge to their largely acoustic repertoire, and reminded me a little of The Shins (which, I now see, is probably not a coincidence).

I notice that they’re playing at the SXSW music festival, so if you’re lucky enough to be going do check them out.

If you’re a Spotify user you can listen to Vetiver here.

This is Bruce Lawson‘s fault, and I’ve never even met the bloke (well, not since I had any idea of who he is; taking second-hand books from his front door – legitimately – doesn’t count).

I’m not as brave as he is so I’m going to revert to the original premise of this ‘chain letter’ rather than follow his example. Bruce wrote about seven things you didn’t want to know about him: all you’re getting from me is seven things you may not have known before.

I built a Punch & Judy booth and I know how to use it (sort of).

I play the guitar a bit. I spent a lot of evenings in the mid-90s accompanying Irish music in London pubs. I wouldn’t mind joining with some other semi-musicians but I’m too afraid to ask (except publicly, here, of however many random people might be passing).

I once made a tie out of paper and wore it to a small evening do with the likes of Cherie Booth, His Honour Justice Hooper, Lesley Macdonagh and Sue Cook. Maybe not my finest hour but I think I got away with it. And definitely no regrets.

One of my favourite places is the Round Room in the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, although I know precious little about art. The place is never deserted but is pleasant and generally peaceful, and has interesting things to look at.

I have two nieces. One of the best bits of Christmas was discovering the younger one under a layer of yoghurt.

I too can have a temper: it tends to be used in outrage at others’ injustices and internally on myself; I can also get argumentative and pedantic (but most people reading this will already know that).

I love reading out loud. Give me an attentive child and a book and I’m happy; so long as I can give at least one of them back afterwards.

And that’s it. All that’s left is for me to link to seven other people who are expected to do the same (ie list seven things about themselves that others may not know).

And the lucky winners are: Pete Ashton, Nicky Getgood, Nick Booth, Jon Bounds, Shona McQuillan, Clare White and Laura Whitehead. (I’m not sure what happens if these people have already been got to, but that’s not my problem!)

Update

Since I wrote this, Ellie Lovell has gone and tagged me with a chain letter that requires twenty five items. So I’ve added Eighteen more things you didn’t know about me. That’s it though. If anyone comes along with a request for even more they can bog right off.
